CATT Lab awarded FHWA Contract to Integrate National Road Weather Data The Center for Advanced Transportation Technology Laboratory (CATT Lab) was recently awarded a contract from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to integrate multi-state “Clarus” data into the Regional Integrated Transportation Information System (RITIS) and provide for the development of real-time visualizations of road weather data in operational systems. Clarus (which is Latin for "clear") is a USDOT sponsored initiative (www.clarusinitiative.org) to develop and demonstrate an integrated surface transportation weather observing, forecasting and data management system, and to establish a partnership to create a Nationwide Surface Transportation Weather Observing and Forecasting System. The objective of Clarus is to provide information to all transportation managers and users to alleviate the effects of adverse weather (e.g., fatalities, injuries and delays). The RITIS platform, developed at the University of Maryland’s CATT Lab, is an automated data sharing, dissemination, and archiving system. RITIS improves transportation efficiency, safety, and security through the integration of existing transit and transportation management data in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C. The system automatically fuses, translates, and standardizes data obtained from multiple agencies in the region in order to provide an enhanced overall view of the region’s transportation network. James Clark School of Engineering Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, supports National, State, and local efforts to provide safe and efficient transportation systems through improved operations and management by means of research and development, technology implementation, training and education.
